Training Overview

Orbitage provides both technical training for technicians and professionals, as well as non-technical for key decision makers, managers and sales/marketing staff.

  • Our technical programs focus on "hands-on" competence and building transferable skills (confidence, critical thinking, analysis, etc.) - this ensure your organisation has a flexible workforce.
  • Our non-technical programs provide a business context to technology where we identify key considerations and opportunities & critically analyse issues impacting organizational strategy.

Our Vendor-Independence enables us to provide independent and impartial advice on competing products and technologies. Our customers know that they are receiving the best advice, without vendor hype, from a recognised, industry-leading authority in Software Development, IT Systems & Software, Computer Networking (IPv4/IPv6), Telecommunications, RF/Wireless, Electronics, Security and Convergence.

As we further embrace cloud services, virtualization and the "Internet of Things" it is clear that all of the above areas of technology are converging - at Orbitage, we see these as "applications of technology." Through our extensive education and training experience over the past 25 years, we see that technical people still need strong fundamental skills to support these new "applications of technology." Skillsets need to: Convergence Book

  1. Be transferable across these applications & services to ensure those who design, plan, implement, maintain & optimize systems develop an end-to-end view and place technology in context
  2. Provide a structured roadmap of competence development from fundamental, through intermediate to expert level

Our management team have written a book on "Convergence Technologies" (Wiley) that highlights this in a mobile environment.

"Learning through doing" - putting customers first

Studies have shown that learning is more effective and enjoyable when it is "student centred" and "practical." Most of our participants are "adult learners" who come with an existing wealth of experience; they appreciate that we take this into consideration and place learning "in context" so that they can see relevance and applicability to their work. This achieves lasting results through hands-on “action based learning.”

Assessment - measuring your team's competence

We focus on "learning through doing" where we measure program outcomes in terms of skills, attributes and underpinning knowledge developed. For most of our technical courses the program outcomes are measured through

  • hands on practical skills such as (troubleshooting a fault within a given timeframe)
  • underpinning knowledge that supports the building of competence - many of these questions are scenario based and require written answers and analysis rather than multiple choice questions
  • continual assessment to ensure that participants are actively involved in the program

This extensive assessment reassures organisations that their staff have the competences required to perform their job successfully. Since the course outcomes are quantifiable this simplifies many internal processes and gives you the information to make the right decisions. This type of assessment is extremely useful for

  • succession planning
  • staff appraisals
  • development planning

Developing Attributes - critical thinking for empowerment

Organisations need their employees to analyse situations rather than simply "buy", "configure" or "program" without taking the end goal into consideration. A central aspect of our training that is just as crucial as developing technical skills is to build the following attributes

  • confidence
  • analysis
  • critical thinking

This reduces costs by minimising "escalations" and reliance on third parties. It also assists with building up the strength of your technical teams and developing leaders from within.

Aligning to National Standards

As nations identify with the need for a skilled workforce they have developed their own skills frameworks that are tailored to their particular environment. The focus of these frameworks is to build a structured career path for individuals based on their competence and on specific attributes. Here are some of the highlights of our experience with this:

Orbitage has aligned its programs with the following frameworks

  • Malaysia - the National Occupational Skills Standards (NOSS) are being developed under the remit of MoHR/DSD (JPK)
  • Singapore - the National InfoComm Framework (NICF) standards are being built by IDA/WDA

In Malaysia, Orbitage is a Pusat Bertauliah and our staff have been instrumental in the development of NOSS standards as well as the Occupational Analysis (OA) for the Telecommunications Sector, published by the Department of Skills Development, Ministry of Human Resources, Malaysia in 2012 (ISBN 978-967-0396-76-7). Orbitage materials are referenced a number of times in the OA, and we have a portfolio of programs that build competence in the areas, and for the job roles, identified in this OA.

In Singapore, Orbitage was an active member of the working group that developed the NICF framework.

We have an uncompromising culture of quality in Orbitage to provide our customers with the best possible service we can offer. You can be assured of the quality in all aspects of our training services.

Orbitage is a Class A training provider in Malaysia under the Human Resources Development Council and a "Pusat Bertauliah" under the Department of Skills Development, Ministry of Human Resources.

We have submitted 8 programs to the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) for them to independently verify the quality and provide them with an "equivalency" level and credit value. This "equivalency" can be used as credit transfers for advanced study at Institutes of Higher Learning
